Wake Forest, NC

Wake Forest is a fast-growing town in Wake County located just north of Raleigh, NC — anchored by a historic downtown district along White Street and a genuinely distinctive academic heritage. Once the original home of Wake Forest University (founded 1834), the town became the university’s namesake and shaped its identity around the campus for over 120 years — until the university relocated its main campus to Winston-Salem in 1956.

Today, the town’s academic identity continues through the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, which took over the historic Wake Forest University campus after the 1956 move — preserving the town’s college-town character and much of its 19th-century architectural heritage. The historic downtown along White Street combines locally owned shops, cafés, and a growing craft brewery scene, giving the town a walkable, community-anchored downtown that distinguishes it from many of the Triangle’s more strip-mall-oriented suburbs.

Beyond the downtown, Wake Forest offers substantive outdoor recreation opportunities — including the popular E. Carroll Joyner Park with its scenic trails, plus access to the sprawling Falls Lake State Recreation Area just north of town, one of the largest recreational lakes in the region. The Wake Forest Farmers Market and other community events keep the town’s civic calendar active throughout the year.

Wake Forest’s proximity to Raleigh and the broader Research Triangle Park economy has driven significant recent growth, with the town’s population expanding rapidly as residents seek a small-town alternative within easy commuting distance of the Triangle’s major employment centers. That combination of historic academic identity, walkable downtown, outdoor recreation, and Triangle-adjacent economic access has made Wake Forest one of the fastest-growing towns in NC.
