Bath, NC

Bath was established in 1705 and was the first Town incorporated in present-day North Carolina. One of the most notorious figures associated with Bath’s history is the pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach). He made Bath his home for a brief period. Bath’s association with Blackbeard came from his visit to the Town and his friendship with some prominent individuals. There are legends and stories about his presence and activities in the area. Bath was also politically significant. It served as the first capital of North Carolina from 1705 to 1722 before the capital moved to Edenton and later to Raleigh. The Town has several historical landmarks, including the Palmer-Marsh House (built in 1751), St. Thomas Episcopal Church (built around 1734), and the Bonner House, which provide insights into the architecture and lifestyle of the early settlers. For those who are into the folklore of North Carolina, the Town is said to have been cursed by George Whitefield, a traveling evangelist. That curse has been said to contribute to the Town’s small population throughout its history.
