Carolina Beach, NC

Carolina Beach is just 20 minutes south of Wilmington, NC, and it prides itself in being a down-to-earth, good-time beach spot along the Atlantic Coast. The Beach is often recognized for its iconic Ferris wheel, but there is plenty more to look for, such as its nationally recognized boardwalk, the beautiful white-sand trails at Carolina Beach State Park, fishing opportunities, the famous Britt’s Donut, tiki bars, and more. Although there are many wonderful things there today, there were many steps to get here: Natives were driven out of the area between 1711-1715 after the Tuscarora War, the population boomed during the Civil War as blockade runners attempted to deliver supplies, Fort Fisher (just south of Carolina Beach) fell in 1865 that led to the end of the Civil War, rebuilding for commercial and tourism purposes began in the late 1800s, and challenges during the Jim Crow era. Despite the bumps in the road throughout its history, Carolina Beach stands today as a destination you do not want to miss.
