Polk State Historic Site, which preserves the birthplace of James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States and one of three U.S. Presidents with roots in North Carolina.
The Historic Site offers a substantive look into Polk’s early Mecklenburg County childhood, his family’s 1795 farm and homestead, and the broader historical context of his consequential presidency (1845-1849) — which drove the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the Oregon Treaty, and the annexation of Texas.
