Set at the confluence of the Dan and Mayo rivers, Madison pairs easy access to the water with a walkable historic downtown, making it a genuine day-trip destination in the northern Piedmont.
On the outdoor side, Madison River Park is a free public park on the Dan River with put-ins for kayaks and tubes, a series of gentle rapids, sandy beach areas, and shaded hammock groves — built on the site of an old dam that was removed to help an endangered fish swim upstream.
Downtown, Madison Dry Goods and Country Store anchors the historic district in a remarkable 1908 building — a working country store with quality apparel, local goods, and gifts on the ground floor, a home-cooked kitchen inside, and an unusual upstairs museum tied to the Lawson Family Tragedy and featured on Netflix’s 28 Days Haunted.
