Madison, NC has quietly built one of the more varied small-town food and drink scenes in Rockingham County — a mix of classic diners, a growing downtown Social District, and a genuinely unusual set of drink makers, all within a short drive of one another. Set at the confluence of the Dan and Mayo rivers, this small town offers more variety than you might expect when it comes to places to eat and drink, from decades-old comfort-food institutions to a craft distillery pouring old-world Italian spirits.
Madison’s classic diners are the backbone of the scene. Bob’s Restaurant & Catering serves country-style breakfast and home-cooked plate meals from an old-time diner packed with antiques and memorabilia in the historic downtown, while the Airport Drive-In Restaurant is a family-owned, cash-only institution on Ayersville Road known for burgers and all-day breakfast. For coffee, The Mad Bean is a creatively decorated café pouring specialty coffee and smoothies alongside sandwiches and sweet treats.
The downtown Madison Social District has brought a new wave of drink makers. GIA Distillery crafts small-batch spirits by hand in a historic 1895 train station — including a traditional Italian grappa that’s rare to find made in North Carolina — while Madison Cork Supply is a wine and craft-beer bottle shop with owner-led tastings and wine on tap, and River Club pours a curated selection of draft beers, cider, and wine in the space that was once Rockingham County’s first craft brewery.
Just outside town, Dragon Glass Winery rounds out the scene with locally grown Muscadine wines, a lakefront tasting room, and a steady calendar of live music near the Rockingham–Stokes county line.
