Apex is one of the most beloved small towns in Wake County, NC — and one of the most frequently ranked best places to live in the United States. Founded in 1873, the town owes its name to its geographic distinction as the highest point on the Chatham Railroad — a quirk of elevation that earned it the lasting nickname “Peak City.” (The same naming convention shaped another NC town: High Point, which earned its name as the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte.)
Initially established as a small trading post serving area farmers, Apex grew rapidly with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. The town’s economy was originally anchored in agriculture and lumber, and rail-driven growth helped establish the historic downtown district, which is today listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown showcases well-preserved 19th-century architecture, including the iconic Apex Union Depot — a meaningful piece of the town’s railroad heritage.
In the modern era, Apex has evolved into one of the Triangle’s most desirable suburban hubs — anchored by its proximity to Research Triangle Park, top-rated public schools, and the broader economic and cultural draw of Wake County. Visitors can explore the Halle Cultural Arts Center (housed in the original Apex Union Depot), enjoy the historic downtown’s shops and dining, or head just outside town to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area — a sprawling outdoor destination known for boating, fishing, hiking, and one of the strongest bald eagle populations in NC.
