Iredell County was formed in 1788 out of land from Rowan County. The County’s name comes from James Iredell, who was the Attorney General for North Carolina during the Revolutionary War, one of the first Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1788. The land was originally inhabited by the Catawba and Cherokee prior to the arrival of European settlers. Iredell County is home to a large portion of Lake Norman, which is the largest freshwater, man-made lake in the nation. Iredell County’s County Seat is Statesville and is also home to Troutman and Mooresville.
