Morganton, NC

Morganton is situated in the western part of North Carolina, within the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Before European settlement, the area around Morganton was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Catawba, Mississippian, and Cherokee. In the 1500s, the Spanish established a fort in the area, which is one of the oldest inland forts to be constructed in the US. The area was further settled by European settlers in the late 1700s, primarily of Scottish, Irish, and German descent. In 1784, Morganton became the county seat of Burke County, a position it still holds today. Morganton is named for Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, who served during the American Revolution. Morganton is a great place to visit on its own to check out all of the amazing shops throughout the City or in conjunction with visiting the two great state parks in Burke County.
