The Roanoke River Lighthouse, originally built in 1886 at the mouth of the Roanoke River in Edenton, North Carolina, served as a navigational aid for ships entering the river from the Albemarle Sound until its decommissioning in 1941. In 2007, the Edenton Historical Commission purchased the lighthouse and had it moved to Colonial Park at Edenton Harbor. The lighthouse was given to the State of North Carolina, and North Carolina provided the funding to have the lighthouse fully restored. The lighthouse is now a part of the Historic Edenton State Historic Site and now serves as a museum, offering tours and educational programs that highlight the maritime history of the region. The lighthouse is a screwpile lighthouse (meaning the manner in which the lighthouse was secured to the bottom of the waterway) and is one of the last of its kind in the United States.
