The area that is now Spring Lake was initially settled in the 1700s. The Town’s development was influenced by the construction of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, which passed through the area. The area was also known for its Rockefeller vacation home and the Overhills Resort, providing leisure activities to some of the country’s elite in the early 1900s. Spring Lake was officially incorporated by the NC General Assembly in 1951. The area experienced economic growth, especially during and after World War II, with the expansion of Fort Liberty. Today, Spring Lake is home to Carvers Creek State Park’s Long Valley Farm Access, which features trails around the James Stillman Rockefeller house, pond, and surrounding land.
