Valdese was founded by a group of Waldensian settlers, a Protestant Christian group originally from the Cottian Alps in Italy. The Waldensians established Valdese in 1893, creating a community centered around their cultural heritage. The Town has preserved its unique heritage and history, evident in its architecture, cultural events, and landmarks. The Valdese Historic District showcases some of the Town’s most significant buildings and sites, including the Old Rock School, the Waldensian Heritage Museum, and the Waldensian Trail of Faith. The annual Waldensian Festival celebrates the Town’s heritage with food, music, and cultural activities.
