The Town of Whitsett is named after the educator and historian William Thornton Whitsett. William founded the Whitsett Institute in 1888, and the Whitsett community grew around the Institute. In many ways, William was a pioneer in education and, at one point, was the historian for Guilford County. Whitsett is located between Greensboro and Burlington and is in close proximity to Gibsonville.
