A Town with Real North Carolina Roots
Jefferson was founded in 1799 — the same year Ashe County itself was officially formed — when 50 acres of land were purchased for $100 to establish the county seat. The new town was named in honor of then-Vice President Thomas Jefferson, making it one of the few American towns to carry his name from the very beginning. Today, it stands as the historic county seat and the civic heart of Ashe County.
The most prominent reminder of that history is the Ashe County Courthouse, built in 1904, which now houses the Museum of Ashe County History. The building itself is one of the most distinctive in this part of the state — and a great starting point for understanding the people, the work, and the traditions that have shaped this corner of the High Country.
A Place Where the New River Begins
Geographically, Jefferson sits in a remarkable spot — close to where the North Fork and South Fork of the New River come together to form one of the oldest rivers in the world. The river runs right through Ashe County and has shaped life here for thousands of years, drawing trout fishermen, kayakers, paddlers, and anyone who appreciates the chance to spend time on the water. Add in nearby trails at Mount Jefferson State Natural Area and the wider New River State Park system, and you’ve got easy access to some of the best outdoor experiences in northwest North Carolina.
A Quiet Corner with Real Character
Whether you’re stopping in to explore the museum, paddling a section of the New River, hiking nearby trails, or just driving through to take in the mountain views, Jefferson rewards anyone who takes the time to look closer. It’s quiet, it’s friendly, and it carries its history with a kind of unfussy pride that you can feel as soon as you walk down the main street. Summer brings festivals celebrating local music and the area’s beloved cheese-making heritage. Fall paints the surrounding mountains in colors you have to see to believe. And year-round, there’s a sense that this small town is exactly where it’s supposed to be.
