The Rich Mountain Carriage Trail at Moses Cone Memorial Park, located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, features a scenic 5.8-mile loop that winds through lush forests and rolling meadows. There is a point on the trail where you can extend your hike down to Trout Lake or take a shorter route back to the parking lot (we did the shorter path on the way up and the Trout Lake path on the way down). This trail is part of the historic 25-mile carriage trail system developed by Moses and Bertha Cone in the early 20th century. Hikers and equestrians can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, including glimpses of Grandfather Mountain.
With its gentle grades and well-maintained paths, the trail is accessible to various skill levels. Additionally, it connects to the park’s expansive 3,500-acre estate, which invites exploration of historic sites like the Cone Manor. The summit of Rich Mountain rewards visitors with panoramic vistas, making it a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
To access the trail, you can start from the Cone Manor House by following the path that leads to Trout Lake. However, the best way to reach the trailhead is by parking at the lot near Trout Lake, where we have consistently found ample parking during our visits.
