Paddy Mountain Park – NPST Access Trail

If you’re visiting Paddy Mountain Park, the NPST Access Trail is where every hike begins. This easy 0.3-mile path serves as the gateway from the parking and picnic area into the park’s broader trail network — and as the future trailhead for the Northern Peaks State Trail (NPST), an ambitious 50-mile route that will eventually connect Ashe and Watauga Counties from West Jefferson to Boone. Be sure to check out the YouTube video and pictures below to get a feel for the trail before you go — or to relive the visit after.

A Short Path with Big Ambitions

What makes the NPST Access Trail meaningful isn’t its length — it’s its role. As a short, gentle climb from the parking area into the rich cove forest, the trail is the required starting point for both the Shagbark Hickory Loop and the Cohosh Loop, the two longer trails that make up the rest of the Paddy Mountain Park system. Walk this one, and you’ve got access to everything else.

The path itself is easy. The grade is gentle, the surface is well-maintained, and the climb is short enough to make this a great option for families with young children, first-time hikers, or anyone wanting a quick walk into the woods. As you head up the small hill, the trail opens into a forest of tall shagbark hickories, oaks, and maples — the kind of classic Appalachian cove forest that gives the park its character.

A Future Northern Peaks State Trail Connection

The NPST Access Trail is also a piece of something much bigger. When complete, the Northern Peaks State Trail will stretch 50 miles through Ashe and Watauga Counties, linking some of the most beautiful protected lands in the High Country — and connecting downtown West Jefferson all the way to Boone. The trail is being developed through a partnership of state grants, local communities, and conservation groups including the Blue Ridge Conservancy, with Paddy Mountain Park serving as one of its key trailheads.

That broader vision is part of what makes a visit here feel meaningful: the trail you’re walking is a small piece of an ambitious, decades-in-the-making project to protect and connect the wild beauty of this corner of North Carolina.
