Three Top Mountain stands out in Ashe County’s North Carolina High Country, close to the small community of Creston. Named for its three rocky peaks, this mountain rises to about 4,800 feet, making it one of the tallest in the area. Its rare amphibolite rock, and the trails through Three Top Mountain Game Lands offer hikers both a challenge and a reward.
The main trail is a 3.6-mile round trip with over 1,200 feet of elevation gain, leading through forests to wide views, hidden waterfalls, and rocky outcrops. The trail is lightly marked and not heavily used, so wearing bright clothing is a good idea during hunting season. Less crowded than other High Country spots, Three Top Mountain gives hikers sweeping views of the Appalachians and a sense of solitude that makes the climb worth it. There is a small parking area near the trailhead.
