Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is a beloved historic landmark in the quiet mountain community of Glendale Springs, North Carolina. Built in 1901 in the Carpenter Gothic style, it first served a small rural congregation before closing in 1946 and falling into disrepair for many years. In the late 1970s, restoration efforts brought the church back to life. In 1980, artist Ben Long painted the impressive true fresco “The Last Supper” behind the altar. This life-size and moving artwork attracts visitors from near and far.
There is also a notable fresco at the back of the sanctuary, often called “The Departure from Sinai” or a similar scene by one of Long’s students. Downstairs, the Christ the King Chapel and columbarium hold more art, including the touching fresco “The Departure of Christ” painted in 1984 by Jeffrey Mims, a student of Ben Long, as a memorial. The basement also features smaller practice frescoes and other works, such as the “Christ the King” mosaic.
Today, Holy Trinity is part of the Parish of the Holy Communion with St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson. The church is open all day and night for prayer, quiet reflection, and the enjoyment of its art. It still has its original pews, pump organ, and altar, and welcomes everyone to experience its peaceful setting and listen to the audio narration about its masterpiece.
