Old Hotel Restaurant & Bar

Some places make you feel the history the moment you walk in the door. The Old Hotel Restaurant & Bar is exactly that kind of place — a beautifully restored 1917 landmark in the heart of downtown West Jefferson, now home to one of the most thoughtful dining experiences in the entire Blue Ridge. With a warm, lovingly preserved historic interior, a kitchen that takes its work seriously, and both casual and fine dining experiences under one roof, this is the kind of stop that turns a regular trip to the mountains into a memorable one. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.

A Century-Old West Jefferson Landmark

The history here runs deep. The Old Hotel — also known as the West Jefferson Hotel — was originally built in 1915 to serve passengers riding the famed Norfolk and Western “Virginia Creeper” railroad line. After tragedy struck and the original hotel burned down on New Year’s Day 1916, the all-brick, block-long structure that still stands today was rebuilt and reopened in 1917. As one of the first major buildings in West Jefferson, the hotel quickly became the heart of the community, at various times housing the town’s bank, barbershop, post office, café, bus station, library, and police station — modern comforts like electric lights, indoor plumbing, and radiator heat included.

After decades of decline, the building was purchased in 2019 by entrepreneur and historic-preservation advocate Mark Beck of Bridgetree Investments, who began a careful, multi-year restoration with a clear mission: bring this iconic piece of West Jefferson back to life. Today, the building has been reborn as the Historic Old Hotel — a beautifully restored boutique hotel that’s home to the Old Hotel Restaurant & Bar, along with luxury guest rooms, a thoughtfully curated retail space, and meeting and event areas. Even if you’re not staying overnight, walking in for dinner feels like stepping into a piece of West Jefferson’s living history.

Two Distinct Dining Experiences

What sets the Old Hotel Restaurant apart is that it really gives you two different ways to dine, depending on the mood you’re in:

  • The Casual Menu — Walk in any time during open hours and grab a table for a more laid-back, first-come, first-served meal. Great food, comfortable atmosphere, and the same beautiful historic setting.
  • The Ginseng Dining Room — For a more elevated, fine-dining experience, reservations are highly recommended for the Ginseng Dining Room. This is the kind of evening you’d plan around — slower-paced, beautifully composed plates, and a setting that earns the description “special occasion.”

It’s a smart split that means the Old Hotel works just as well for a quick lunch as it does for an anniversary dinner — without ever losing the sense of place that makes it so special.

A Setting Worth Lingering In

The interior is exactly what you hope a restored 1917 building feels like — exposed brick, period detailing, warm lighting, and the kind of architectural touches you simply can’t recreate in a new build. The walls feature works by local Ashe County artists, with each piece reflecting the history and landscape of the region — a nice touch that ties the restaurant even more deeply to its place.

The bar program is just as thoughtful, with handcrafted cocktails, a curated wine list, and local beers — a great spot to stop in for an aperitif before dinner or a nightcap after.

Good to Know

  • Reservations are highly recommended for the Ginseng Dining Room fine-dining experience; the casual menu is walk-in, first-come, first-served.
  • The restaurant is part of the Historic Old Hotel — so it pairs perfectly with an overnight stay if you’re making a weekend of it.
  • Local sourcing is a meaningful part of the kitchen’s approach — expect ingredients tied to the surrounding farms and producers of Ashe County.
  • Family-friendly atmosphere in the casual dining areas; the Ginseng Dining Room is more suited to adult or special-occasion dining.
  • Located at 5 West Main Street, right in the heart of downtown West Jefferson — walkable to the rest of the downtown corridor.

A West Jefferson Must-Do

The Old Hotel Restaurant & Bar isn’t just a great place to eat — it’s one of those rare meals where the building, the kitchen, the staff, and the story all come together to create something that genuinely feels worth the trip. Whether you stop in for a relaxed casual meal, settle into the Ginseng Dining Room for a special evening, or just grab a cocktail at the bar to take in the historic setting, this is the kind of place that makes you fall in love with small-town North Carolina all over again.
