Chimney Rock State Park

Chimney Rock State Park is renowned for its iconic 315-foot granite monolith, Chimney Rock, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Lure. Visitors can reach the top of Chimney Rock by hiking on a series of well-maintained trails or taking an elevator. Chimney Rock’s history as a tourist destination predates its designation as a State Park in 2007. Dr. Lucius B. Morse recognized the potential of Chimney Rock as a tourist attraction due to its stunning views and purchased the property in 1885. In 1902, the Morse family opened Chimney Rock Park to the public, building a staircase of 198 steps leading to the top of the rock for accessibility. The Morse family is primarily responsible for building most of what you see at the Park today, including the paved roads to the base of Chimney Rock and the elevator to take you to the top.

Chimney Rock State Park offers a network of hiking trails suitable for different skill levels. The Outcroppings Trail is the most popular trail, leading to the summit of Chimney Rock. Other trails, such as the Skyline Trail and the Hickory Nut Falls Trail, provide opportunities to explore different parts of the Park, including waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. Hickory Nut Falls, a 404-foot waterfall, is one of the tallest in the eastern United States. The Park allows visitors to enjoy it in various ways, making it one of the most popular State Parks in the North Carolina system.
