Hiking at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is one of the most genuinely versatile outdoor experiences in central North Carolina — with over 14 miles of trails weaving through forests, rolling hills, and shoreline views of the sprawling 14,000-acre Jordan Lake reservoir. Located between Apex and Pittsboro, the 4,500-acre recreation area offers a broad mix of trail experiences — from easy 1-mile family loops with historical layering to moderate 2.7-mile hikes with rocky, mountain-feel terrain rare for the central NC piedmont.
The trails cater to a wide range of skill levels, all on well-maintained paths with clear signage. Hikers can spot year-round bald eagles, migratory ospreys, deer, and (on some trails) turtles along the routes, as well as wildflowers in the warmer months. One practical note worth planning around: there is a significant amount of poison ivy along many of the trails, so it’s important to stay on the paths.
We’ve compiled a complete list of trails at Jordan Lake that we’ve personally hiked — organized below by their access points. Each image and trail title is clickable, leading to a dedicated page for that specific trail. We hope this inspires you to explore the beauty of Jordan Lake!
