Guilford College’s Underground Railroad Trail, located in the historic New Garden Woods in Greensboro, North Carolina, offers a poignant connection to the past, tracing the paths once taken by freedom seekers during the early 19th century. This trail winds through an old-growth forest that served as a refuge for enslaved African Americans escaping to free states and Canada, with local Quakers and abolitionists providing critical support. A notable feature of the trail is the 350-year-old tulip poplar tree, known as the “Underground Railroad Tree,” which stood as a silent witness to these courageous journeys. The trail, approximately 0.3 miles one-way, includes an accessible viewing platform and educational resources developed in partnership with Guilford County Schools, making it a significant site for both historical reflection and educational exploration.
