For a small mountain town in the northern reaches of Ashe County, Lansing offers a surprising amount to explore on foot. From a historic walking trail that tells the story of the old Virginia Creeper rail line to a sprawling community park that runs alongside Big Horse Creek, the attractions here lean into what makes Lansing special — its rail heritage, its quiet trout streams, and its laid-back small-town pace. Click on any of the attractions below to explore the spots we’ve personally visited around Lansing.
What we love about Lansing is just how easy it is to spend a peaceful half day here without having to plan around anything. You can start with a stroll along the Historic Lansing Walking Trail, which follows the old Virginia Creeper railroad bed through downtown and pairs perfectly with photos of the well-preserved Creeper Trail Station. Then head over to Lansing Creeper Trail Park — a beautifully maintained community park running alongside Big Horse Creek, with walking trails, a paved loop, fishing spots, a playground, and even an off-leash area for dogs.
Lansing also makes a great base for the wider Ashe County area. The Lost Province Center for the Cultural Arts is just a short walk away for live music and Appalachian crafts. Barn quilt trails wind through the surrounding hills. And the broader High Country — Mount Jefferson, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the New River — is all within easy reach for a day’s adventure. Whether you’re here for the trails, the history, or just a slower pace of life, Lansing rewards anyone who takes the time to look closer.
