Todd, NC

Todd is one of those rare mountain communities where the past feels genuinely present. Set along the southern edge of Ashe County and straddling the Watauga County line, this small unincorporated community has been quietly going about its business for nearly 250 years — through frontier settlement, a timber-boom heyday, the rise and fall of the Virginia Creeper railroad, and a long evolution into the peaceful, character-filled community it is today. With the historic Todd General Store anchoring downtown and Elk Knob State Park rising just outside town, Todd is a worthwhile detour for anyone exploring this part of the High Country. A Community Built by the Frontier and the Railroad

People first settled in Todd between 1780 and 1833, drawn by the rivers, the timber, and the fertile mountain valleys. The community received its first post office in 1837 and was officially named Todd in 1894, in honor of Joseph Warren Todd.

Todd’s biggest growth came in the early 1900s, when the Carolina-Virginia Railway — known affectionately as the “Virginia Creeper” — reached town and kicked off a busy timber boom. For a few short decades, Todd was a bustling stop along the line, with mills, stores, and a thriving downtown. But by the 1930s, the timber was largely gone, the railroad stopped running, and the local economy slowed dramatically. In the 1970s, Todd lost its town charter and became the unincorporated community it remains today.

What stayed behind is the part of Todd that’s still drawing visitors more than a century later. The Todd General Store — believed to be the oldest continuously operating general store in North Carolina — anchors the heart of the community as a working tribute to that boom-era past.

A Place Built for Slowing Down

What makes Todd so worth a visit isn’t any one big attraction — it’s the everyday rhythm of the place. The New River winds through the surrounding hills, drawing paddlers and trout fishermen. Quiet country roads invite slow drives with the windows down. Local barn quilts, scenic farmland, and historic buildings reward anyone willing to look closer. And just outside the community, Elk Knob State Park — opened in 2003 — protects more than 3,500 acres of high-elevation hardwood forest, offering some of the best summit hiking and panoramic views in the High Country.

Whether you’re stopping at the Todd General Store for a cold drink and a slice of pie, paddling a section of the New River, or hiking to the summit of Elk Knob, Todd rewards anyone who takes the time to make the detour.
