Attractions – Todd, NC

For a small mountain community along the southern edge of Ashe County, Todd has a way of rewarding anyone who takes the time to stop in. Set along the headwaters of the South Fork of the New River and surrounded by some of the most beautiful high country in this part of North Carolina, the area offers a peaceful mix of mountain trails, river access, and genuine Appalachian character. Click on the attractions below to explore the spots we’ve personally visited around Todd.

The standout among Todd’s outdoor offerings is Elk Knob State Park — a 3,500-acre high-elevation park rising above the surrounding hills, with a summit trail that delivers one of the best panoramic views in the High Country. It’s the kind of hike that earns its place as a must-do for serious mountain visitors, and a key reason Todd has become a destination in its own right.

Beyond the state park, the broader Todd area is built for slowing down. The South Fork of the New River winds through the surrounding hills, drawing paddlers and trout fishermen. Quiet country roads invite slow drives. The historic Todd General Store anchors downtown with character that goes back more than a century. And nearby Watauga County destinations — Boone, Blowing Rock, and the larger High Country — are all within easy reach for a fuller weekend in the mountains.
