Shangri-La Stone Village

Tucked away along a quiet stretch of NC Highway 86 in Prospect Hill, North Carolina, lies a whimsical hidden gem: Shangri-La Stone Village. This enchanting miniature town, crafted entirely by hand by retired tobacco farmer Henry L. Warren starting in 1968, is a testament to one man’s creative vision and tireless dedication.

At age 72, Warren began building pint-sized stone structures—27 in total, including a church, school, library, and even a tiny jail—using rocks he quarried from his own land and nearby properties. Each building, standing about five feet tall, bursts with quirky details, like an inverted table leg for a church steeple or scattered arrowheads embedded in the pathways. Inspired by the mythical paradise from James Hilton’s Lost Horizon, Warren’s Shangri-La is free to visit, open daily during daylight hours, and invites guests to leave trinkets or sign a guestbook, adding to its fairytale charm.

A quick detour from the hustle of nearby Durham or Chapel Hill, this magical village offers a serene escape and a glimpse into a labor of love that continues to captivate visitors nearly half a century after Warren’s passing in 1977.
