A County Seat with Deep Roots

When Caswell County was formed from Orange County in 1777, the original county seat was located at Leasburg. After Person County was carved out of Caswell in 1791, the seat was relocated to a more central spot — first known simply as Caswell Court House. In 1833, the town was officially renamed Yanceyville in honor of Bartlett Yancey (1785-1828), a Caswell County native who served as a U.S. Congressman from 1813 to 1817 and as Speaker of the North Carolina Senate from 1817 to 1827. Yancey is best remembered today for his role in establishing North Carolina’s public school system, and his Bartlett Yancey House — a Federal-era home dating to around 1810 — still stands as a National Register of Historic Places site just outside town.

A Town Built During the Bright Leaf Boom

From roughly the 1830s through 1861, Yanceyville experienced an extraordinary period of growth that historians often refer to as the Bright Leaf Boom Era. This was the period when the accidental 1839 discovery of Bright Leaf tobacco curing by Stephen, an enslaved man on the plantation of Abisha Slade in southern Caswell County, transformed the broader region’s economy and made Caswell County briefly one of the wealthiest counties in the state. The wealth flowed through Yanceyville, and many of the stately Greek Revival, Federal, and antebellum homes that still line the town’s streets today were built during this remarkable 30-year window.

The Historic Caswell County Courthouse

The defining architectural landmark in Yanceyville is the Caswell County Courthouse, which stands on Courthouse Square in the heart of town. Built between 1858 and 1861 by architect William Percival, the courthouse is a striking Italian Romanesque structure with classical features that combine to create one of the most distinctive county courthouses in North Carolina. The two-story, stuccoed brick building sits on an elevated granite foundation, with a two-level recessed entrance porch and an octagonal cupola. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973, the courthouse remains the centerpiece of the Yanceyville Historic District.

Yanceyville Today

Today, Yanceyville is home to roughly 1,900 residents, and the town’s motto — “Tradition with Vision” — captures the way the community continues to honor its heritage while welcoming new generations. The downtown features the historic courthouse, antique shops, locally owned restaurants, and the Richmond-Miles History Museum, which preserves and shares the broader story of Caswell County. Just a short walk away, the Maud F. Gatewood Municipal Park offers a peaceful spot for picnics, and the Caswell Community Arboretum — set behind the historic courthouse — provides a scenic green space for nature lovers.
