Yanceyville, NC, is often known for its history during the Revolutionary War, and has been home to Congressmen, scholars, writers, and historians. The Caswell County Courthouse was completed in 1861 for $28,000 and is a prominent historic building due to its combination of Italian Romanesque and Classical architecture. The Courthouse prides itself in its beautifully decorated and preserved historic pieces, such as the judge’s bench, cabinetry, plaster wall and corbels, and more. Along with artisanal pieces in the Courthouse, the building also holds a dark history, including the murder of John “Chicken” Stephens, which led to the Kirk-Holden War, and the impeachment of Governor William Holden.
