Four Hounds Distilling

Four Hounds Distilling is one of those hidden gems that shows not all of Carolina Beach’s best places are right on the sand. As Pleasure Island’s first legal distillery, it was started by two best friends and named for their families’ four dogs. That story helps create the welcoming, dog-friendly feel you’ll find in the tasting room.

The main attraction here is craft rum made with local, all-natural ingredients. Their signature blend combines demerara sugar, molasses, yeast, and water, then distills it with tropical dried fruits and locally roasted coffee. After that, it rests on dark-toasted French oak before bottling. The result is a balanced spirit with a sweet rum aroma and a subtle woody finish, making it enjoyable for both rum and whiskey fans. Highlights include their Sea Level Rum, which is a slightly sweeter option blended with port wine and a hint of vanilla, and the 100-proof “Queen’s Share,” a smooth yet bold rum that works well in cocktails or as a floater on frozen drinks.

The tasting room is a laid-back local favorite where you can try rum flights, enjoy craft cocktails like the Spicy Salty Dog, browse merchandise, and, of course, check out the “pup wall.” The staff is known for being friendly, the cocktails are excellent, and the whole experience is just what you’d hope for in a small-batch coastal distillery: personal, passionate, and a bit off the beaten path.
