Fort Fisher / Southport Ferry

If you want a true Kure Beach experience for your afternoon, try the Southport–Fort Fisher  Ferry. This scenic 35-minute trip across the Cape Fear River is both a way to get around and a mini cruise. It’s one of the best hidden gems on the southern North Carolina coast. The Fort Fisher terminal is at the southern tip of the island, just past the North Carolina Aquarium, making it easy to add to a day of exploring this part of Kure Beach.

A Scenic Ride Across the Cape Fear

The ferry travels across the mouth of the Cape Fear River, offering wide-open water views all around. After you board and the crew says it’s safe, you can leave your car and go to the observation deck or walk to the front or back of the boat to enjoy the scenery. Watch for dolphins, pelicans, shrimp boats at work, and sometimes a cargo ship heading up the river to Wilmington.

When you arrive on the other side, you’ll dock about two miles from the historic waterfront town of Southport. This charming fishing village has great seafood restaurants, antique shops, a beautiful riverside walking path, and filming locations from movies and TV shows like Safe Haven and Under the Dome. It’s a perfect spot for a half-day or full-day trip from Kure Beach.

Schedule, Fares, and How It Works

The North Carolina Department of Transportation operates the ferry all year, with more crossings during the busy spring and summer months and a lighter schedule at other times. Start and stop times change depending on the season and your departure terminal, so it’s smart to check the current schedule before you go, especially if you want to catch the last ride of the day.

Fares are affordable, with different prices for pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles based on size. You can buy tickets at the terminal, online through NCDOT, or by calling 1-800-BY-FERRY. Reservations aren’t accepted for this route. It’s first-come, first-served, so during busy summer days and holiday weekends, it’s best to arrive early. Boarding begins about 10 minutes before departure, and you should be in your vehicle and ready to go about 15 minutes before the scheduled time.

For the most up-to-date schedule and fare information, visit the NCDOT Website or call (910) 457-6942 for recorded schedule information.

Good to Know

  • Pets are welcome as long as they stay leashed or remain in your vehicle.
  • Both terminals have restrooms and concessions if you need to grab a snack or stretch your legs before the ride.
  • Weather can affect service, and high winds or heavy fog sometimes cause delays or cancellations.
  • Walking onto the ferry saves both money and space. If you don’t need a car in Southport, board as a pedestrian and explore the historic downtown on foot or rent a bike once you arrive.

A Coastal Tradition Worth the Ride

Whether you use it as a shortcut heading south, a scenic detour, or just a reason to spend a day in Southport, the Fort Fisher Ferry is a simple coastal pleasure that makes any Kure Beach trip feel extra special. Grab a coffee, roll down your windows, and enjoy the ride.
