Wake Forest’s food and beverage scene is genuinely notable for its concentrated craft brewery culture — with five distinct craft breweries operating in the town alongside a historic independent coffee shop, most clustered around the town’s historic White Street downtown corridor. The concentration is unusual for a Triangle suburb, and each brewery has genuinely committed to a distinctive editorial identity — spanning traditional European brewing, themed brand concepts, and historic adaptive reuse — that gives visitors meaningfully different craft beer experiences within a walkable downtown.

Choosing Your Wake Forest Food and Beverage Stop

For traditional European brewing traditions, two of Wake Forest’s craft breweries specialize in styles rarely attempted by American craft breweries. Blackbird Brewery — founded in 2022 by husband-and-wife team Harmony and Ian VanGundy — specializes in authentic European-style pilsners alongside a signature Belgian Witbier, with an intimate 1,000-square-foot taproom paired with a genuinely generous 5,000-square-foot outdoor beer garden. Fortnight Brewing Wake Forest is the satellite location of Cary’s celebrated Fortnight Brewing Company — extending Englishman Stuart Arnold’s commitment to traditional cask-conditioned real ale served the traditional English way alongside a 24-tap system that also pours ciders, prosecco, and wine slushies.

For distinctive themed brewery concepts where the founding cultural identity genuinely shapes the visitor experience, two Wake Forest breweries have committed fully to their brand concepts. Norse Brewing Company is built around the Danish concept of “hygge” — with a Nordic-themed Great Hall, a self-branded “Modern Viking Community” identity, and a signature Viking Burger made from an unusual bison + boar + wagyu + elk protein blend. Lonerider at Wake Forest — officially the “Lonerider Brewing Company Hideout and Distillery” — brings a Western outlaw brand identity to the town, with a saloon-style aesthetic, an integrated distillery pouring Lonerider Spirits’ whiskeys, and the wonderfully named Shotgun Betty Hefeweizen and Peacemaker IPA.

For historic downtown character and long-established craft brewing, White Street Brewing Company is Wake Forest’s original craft brewery destination — founded in 2012 and set within a restored 1930s car dealership on the town’s namesake historic White Street corridor. Signature offerings include the award-winning Kölsch-Style Ale (a technically demanding German-style ale most American craft breweries don’t attempt), the Hoptimist IPA, the wonderfully named Koschei the Deathless Russian Imperial Stout, and a celebrated festive winter beer program that has built a distinct seasonal following.

For historic downtown independent coffee, Wake Forest Coffee Company is the town’s longest-running independent coffee shop — a family-owned operation running since 2008 in a genuinely historic two-story building constructed in 1919. The distinctive upstairs loft provides quiet workspace and intimate gathering space above the main floor, and the menu spans traditional coffee drinks, signature smoothies (including a strawberry-banana with whipped cream), and rotating fresh-baked goods.
