Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

The main attraction of Kerr Lake is its vast, 50,000-acre reservoir. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of water-based activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing. The lake’s size provides ample space for various water sports and recreation. The history of the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area area is closely tied to the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam on the Roanoke River. The Dam was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1941 as part of the Roanoke River Basin Development Project, which aimed to control flooding, generate hydroelectric power, and provide recreational opportunities. Construction began in 1946 and was completed in the early 1950s. The resulting Kerr Lake expands into North Carolina and Virginia and is known as Buggs Island Lake in Virginia (the largest lake in Virginia). In 1952, the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation officially established Kerr Lake State Recreation Area. This marked the beginning of state-managed recreational facilities and services in the area, including campgrounds, hiking trails, boat ramps, and picnic areas. We really enjoyed hiking some of the trails and checking out the lakeside beach at the Recreation Area.
