Lake James State Park

Lake James in western North Carolina was formed in 1916 with the construction of the Lake James Dam on the Catawba River. Named after James Buchanan Duke, it serves as a reservoir primarily for hydroelectric power generation managed by Duke Energy. Over the years, the lake has evolved into a popular recreational destination, with boating, fishing, camping, and hiking opportunities. Lake James State Park, established in the 1980s, plays a key role in providing public access and preserving the natural environment. The lake has had a positive economic impact on the region, contributing to tourism and outdoor recreation. Community and environmental groups are actively involved in maintaining the ecological balance and sustainable development of the area, ensuring that Lake James remains a scenic and valuable asset for both local communities and visitors.
