Pettigrew State Park

Pettigrew State Park, nestled in eastern North Carolina near Lake Phelps, offers a serene retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This expansive park, encompassing just under 6,000 acres, boasts diverse ecosystems ranging from cypress swamps to open marshlands. Lake Phelps, one of the park’s focal points, is the second-largest natural lake in the state and provides ample opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. Visitors can explore miles of hiking trails that wind through lush forests and along the lake’s edge, offering glimpses of wildlife and stunning vistas. The park’s rich history is evident with the nearby historic site, Somerset Place, a restored antebellum plantation that provides insight into the region’s past (you can walk to Somerset Place from Pettigrew’s campground). Whether seeking outdoor adventure or a peaceful escape into nature, Pettigrew State Park promises a memorable experience in the heart of North Carolina’s coastal plain. Another added bonus is that the park is next to Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, providing even more opportunities for outdoor adventurers.
