South Mountains State Park

South Mountains State Park is situated in Burke County, North Carolina, approximately 18 miles south of Morganton. The Park covers an area of over 20,000 acres in the South Mountains. The Park is characterized by its rugged terrain, deep gorges, waterfalls, and diverse plant and animal life. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, turkey, and a range of bird species. The Park offers a wide range of hiking opportunities. There are numerous hiking trails varying in length and difficulty, providing options for hikers of all levels. The Park’s most popular trail is the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail, which leads to a stunning 80-foot waterfall. The Jacob Fork River flows through the Park, providing opportunities for fishing, wading, and swimming in designated areas. The Park also offers several camping options, including family campsites and equestrian campsites. There are also backpacking campsites for those interested in more primitive camping experiences. If you are into horseback riding or mountain biking, the Park maintains trails for both. There are multiple waterfalls in the park (we have explored the High Shoals Falls and the Big Bear Falls).
