The Stone Mountain State Park is located in both Alleghany County and Wilkes County. It opened in 1969 with an initial effort by the local population to protect the land. Stone Mountain is one of the largest parks in the NC State Park System and features over 20 miles of hiking trails, 10 miles of horseback riding trails, fishing, and areas designated for rock climbing. It is also home to the historic Hutchinson Homestead (located at the base of Stone Mountain) and multiple waterfalls. The trek to the top of Stone Mountain can be fairly challenging with the number of steep stairs and inclines that will need to be navigated; however, the views from the top are incredible for those who are capable of making it to the top. For those who are looking for a more relaxed hike, the hike to the base of the mountain is a pretty easy hike that will still present you with great views of the 600-foot granite dome, which is the hallmark of Stone Mountain.

The Park features over 14,000 acres, with rock climbing, camping, and hiking as some of the outdoor activities to engage in. However, the incredible Stone Mountain dome of exposed granite is the hallmark of the Park (designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1974). There are also multiple gorgeous waterfalls to check out throughout the Park. The hike to the base of Stone Mountain is relatively easy (you can still get some fantastic views of Stone Mountain from the base); however, the hike to the top of Stone Mountain is a bit challenging due to the number of stairs and steep inclines, but the view from the top is worth the effort.
