If you’re looking for a Wilmington brewery built around its outdoor space, look no further. Outer Dunes Brewing Company is an oasis tucked into the Porters Neck area. If you’re looking for a Wilmington brewery built around its outdoor space, look no further. Outer Dunes Brewing Company is an oasis tucked into the Porters Neck area of north Wilmington — adjacent to Market Street but hidden away in the oaks, with what might just be the best beer garden in the city. Add a rustic tap house, a thriving events calendar, and craft beer brewed right on site, and you’ve got one of the most laid-back, easy-to-love brewery experiences in the area. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.

A Brewery Built Around the Beer Garden

Outer Dunes occupies a peaceful little oasis on Market Street in north Wilmington’s Porters Neck area. While the brewery sits right alongside one of the city’s busier corridors, the building and its sprawling outdoor space are tucked behind a canopy of old live oaks — giving the whole property a hidden, away-from-it-all feel that’s hard to find at most breweries in town.

The brewery expanded its operations in early 2023, completing construction of a 2,400-square-foot production facility for a 10-barrel Premier Stainless brewhouse — a big step up from the original 1-barrel pilot system. That investment in capacity has translated into a steady, growing beer lineup that keeps the taproom interesting visit after visit.

The Beer

Outer Dunes brews a wide variety of craft beers on site, with the lineup leaning into approachable styles done well. Expect to find IPAs in regular rotation — including hazy variations — along with lagers, porters, stouts, fruited sours, and the occasional small-batch one-off. The brewery has built a particularly loyal following for its IPAs and seasonal specialty releases, but the variety means there’s almost always something on tap that fits whatever mood you walked in with.

For non-beer drinkers, the bar also serves wine, cider, hard seltzer, hard kombucha, and mixed cocktails — making it one of the more accommodating beer-focused spots in town for groups with mixed preferences.

The Beer Garden

The beer garden is the headliner. Spread out under a canopy of mature live oaks, it’s a genuinely spacious outdoor space with plenty of picnic tables, fire pits for cooler evenings, and a dedicated stage for live music. Cornhole and other yard games are usually in play, and the whole layout has a relaxed, dog-friendly vibe that makes it a favorite spot to settle in for the afternoon. The beer garden welcomes families until 6 PM, when the brewery becomes an adults-only space for the evening.

There’s also a rustic indoor tap house for the days when you’d rather be inside, plus a private indoor event venue that’s become a popular spot for community gatherings and private functions.

Events and Community

What really brings Outer Dunes to life is its busy events calendar. Across the week, you’ll find a regularly rotating mix of live music, trivia nights, music bingo, run clubs, comedy shows, vendor markets, Oktoberfest, and craft events — many of them free with a beer in hand. The brewery has also become a popular venue for private events like baby showers, birthdays, and corporate gatherings, with staff that consistently get good marks for being helpful and accommodating.

Good to Know

  • Family-friendly until 6 PM — children are welcome in the beer garden during the day, with the brewery transitioning to an adults-only space in the evenings.
  • One of Wilmington’s best beer gardens — shaded, spacious, and built for hanging out.
  • Dog-friendly — leashed dogs are welcome in the beer garden.
  • Food trucks rotate at the brewery regularly, so there’s almost always something to eat alongside your beer.
  • Live music and weekly events are a regular fixture — check ahead if you want to plan around something specific.
  • Located at 7976 Market Street in the Porters Neck area, north of Military Cutoff Road.

A Wilmington Hidden Oasis

Outer Dunes Brewing Company is exactly the kind of brewery you hope to stumble across — tucked away, beautifully set, full of personality, and serving genuinely good beer. The outdoor space is the star of the show, but everything around it — the tap house, the events, the staff, the food trucks — adds up to a brewery that does just about everything well. If you’re putting together a Wilmington brewery day, leave room for an extra-long stop at Outer Dunes. You won’t regret it.
