Some restaurants are all about the food. Some are all about the drinks. Rebellion NC is one of the rare ones that nails both — a laid-back downtown Wilmington tavern with a serious bourbon program, a North Carolina-twist American comfort menu, and one of the most lively patios in the historic district. Tucked into a restored historic building right on Front Street, this is the kind of place that earns regulars from their very first visit. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.
A DC Concept That Found Its Wilmington Home
Rebellion NC has its roots in Washington, D.C., where the original Rebellion has built a strong following. In 2018, founding partner Brian Westlye and co-founder Lenny Codispot — joined in Wilmington by partner and chef Travis Weiss — opened the brand’s second outpost on Front Street, taking over a restored historic building in the heart of downtown. The Wilmington location quickly developed its own identity, with a menu and atmosphere built specifically for the Cape Fear coast.
The space itself fits the concept perfectly — warm and inviting, with brick-layered bar areas, banquet-style dining room seating, and an open-air patio that comes alive during the warmer months. It feels like a classic American tavern with a modern, fresh feel — the kind of place you can settle in for an hour or stay for the whole evening.
The Whiskey Program
This is where Rebellion really separates itself. The bar carries 375+ whiskies — including a deep and carefully curated bourbon selection that has been recognized five times as one of America’s Best Bourbon Bars by The Bourbon Review. That kind of recognition isn’t easy to earn once, let alone five times.
For whiskey and bourbon fans, this is a destination in its own right. The bartenders are knowledgeable, the staff hosts regular whiskey tastings, and the menu rewards the curious — whether you’re a seasoned bourbon drinker or just looking to explore the world of American whiskey.
More Than Whiskey
While the bourbon is the headliner, Rebellion’s drink lineup goes well beyond it. The bar features:
- 30+ craft beers on tap, with a strong rotation of North Carolina favorites
- Inventive craft cocktails and well-executed classics
- A solid wine list
- Two full bars to keep things moving on busy nights
So even if whiskey isn’t your thing, there’s plenty here to make for a great night out.
The Food
Executive Chef Travis Weiss has built a menu of American comfort food with a Southern twist — classic pub favorites done thoughtfully, with creative riffs that elevate them well above what you’d expect from a downtown tavern. The menu rotates seasonally to keep things fresh, but plenty of regular favorites have earned permanent residence. A few standouts:
- Smoked-then-fried wings — smoky on the outside, crispy on the skin
- The Wild Bunch Burger — topped with chimichurri, regularly cited as a top pick
- El Pub Cubano — Rebellion’s take on the classic Cuban sandwich and a longtime regulars’ favorite
- The 1836 — a classic burger on a sesame seed bun
- Pork Bites — crispy, savory, and easy to order again
- Brussels Sprouts — a side that genuinely gets rave reviews
- Mac and Cheese — frequently called out as one of the best in town
There’s also a serving of “Mo Sauce” that regulars order on the side for dipping fries and wings — a small detail that’s earned its own following.
The Patio
Rebellion’s outdoor patio is one of the most lively spots in downtown Wilmington. With its own separate bar, live music on weekend nights (typically Friday through Sunday during the warmer months), and a comfortable, dog-friendly setup, it’s a destination in its own right — and a great spot to settle in for a casual lunch, an afternoon drink, or a Friday night out.
Good to Know
- Dog-friendly patio — leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor space.
- Reservations are accepted and recommended for busier nights.
- Live music on the patio Friday through Sunday during the warmer months.
- Whiskey tastings and special events happen regularly — check ahead if you’d like to plan around one.
- Open late most days — Rebellion stays open later than most downtown spots, making it a great last stop on a downtown night out.
- Located at 15 South Front Street, right in the heart of historic downtown Wilmington, walkable to the Riverwalk, The Cotton Exchange, and the rest of the downtown core.
A Wilmington Standout
Rebellion NC has quietly become one of the most well-rounded restaurants and bars in downtown Wilmington. The whiskey program is genuinely one of the best in the country, the food does more than hold its own, and the laid-back, lively atmosphere makes it just as good for a Sunday lunch as it is for a Friday night out. Whether you’re a bourbon enthusiast, a burger lover, or just looking for a great downtown stop to make a night of, this is one to add to your list.
