Taste Carolina Wilmington Downtown Tasting Tour

If you really want to get to know Wilmington, eat your way through it. The Taste Carolina Wilmington Food Tour is a guided walking tour through the heart of historic downtown, hitting four or five locally owned restaurants, bars, and food shops for a curated sampling of savory and sweet bites — all paired with small drinks, a generous helping of local history, and the kind of insider knowledge you just don’t get from a guidebook. It’s one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Wilmington, and a particularly great option for visitors getting to know the city for the first time. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the tour before you go — or to relive the experience after.

A North Carolina Original

Taste Carolina was founded in 2009 by a North Carolina native passionate about fine dining and local culinary culture. From a single concept — sharing favorite places to eat across the state — it has grown into one of the most respected food tour companies in the South, with culinary tours and events in nine historic cities, including Wilmington, Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Asheville, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, Hillsborough, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem.

The recognition has followed. USA TODAY named Taste Carolina one of the “10 must-try food tours in North America,” and PBS’s NC Weekend has featured the company on its walking food tours showcasing tastings, chef stories, and local history. The Wilmington tour is built on the same formula — pairing locally owned restaurants that support local farmers and vendors with a knowledgeable guide who brings the city to life.

What to Expect on the Tour

The Wilmington Downtown Tasting Tour runs about three hours and covers roughly two leisurely miles of historic downtown on foot. Along the way, you’ll typically visit four or five locally-owned restaurants, bars, and food shops — sampling savory and sweet dishes at each stop, paired with small alcoholic beverages where appropriate. The lineup rotates seasonally to keep things fresh and supports a different mix of Wilmington’s best independent businesses.

Restaurants featured on past tours have included favorites like Fortunate Glass, The Vine, Savorez, Beer Barrio, Fox’s Hole in the Wall, Prost, Floriana, Caprice, Cape Fear Rum Cake, and Gelarto — a great cross-section of the city’s locally rooted food and drink scene.

Between stops, your guide weaves in stories about Wilmington’s 300 years of history, its beautiful architecture, and the lively culture that makes downtown what it is today. It’s part food tour, part walking history lesson, and entirely a great way to spend an afternoon.

A Dinner & Drinks Tour Too

For visitors looking for a more substantial experience, Taste Carolina also offers a Wilmington Downtown Dinner & Drinks Tour — a spirited evening tour that hits multiple restaurants and craft cocktail bars across town. You’ll meet chefs and mixologists, sample savory and sweet bites paired with curated drinks, and enjoy a more dinner-sized experience than the standard afternoon tasting. This one is ages 21+ only.
