Morehead City, NC is the largest town in Carteret County and one of the most active hubs along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. The town’s attractions span scenic waterfront spaces, public parks, and accessible outdoor recreation along Bogue Sound — giving visitors plenty of distinctive coastal experiences to anchor a day or weekend along the broader Carteret County coast.
The town’s character is genuinely shaped by its working waterfront. Morehead City is home to North Carolina’s only deepwater seaport, and the busy commercial harbor sits side by side with charter fishing fleets, recreational boating, and a downtown district lined with restaurants and shops. The annual NC Seafood Festival (held the first weekend in October) and the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament (one of NC’s most famous fishing tournaments) draw visitors from across the state and beyond.
Beyond the waterfront, Morehead City offers thoughtful family-friendly parks, public spaces, and outdoor recreation along the sound side of town. The combination of a working port, casual coastal recreation, and easy access to nearby Atlantic Beach (just across the causeway) makes Morehead City a natural base for exploring the broader Crystal Coast.
