An 1850s Rail-to-Sea Port Named for Governor John Motley Morehead
Morehead City was founded in the 1850s as part of an ambitious plan to connect North Carolina’s interior to the Atlantic Ocean. The town was named for Governor John Motley Morehead, a railroad advocate who championed the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad as a way to move agricultural goods from the state’s interior to a working deep-water port.
The railroad arrived in 1858, and Morehead City was established as the southern terminus — the “end of the line, beginning of the sea.” The town’s location on Bogue Sound near Beaufort Inlet gave the new port direct access to broader Atlantic shipping routes. Today, the North Carolina State Port of Morehead City continues that tradition as one of the state’s two main deep-water ports.
The Working Waterfront and the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
Morehead City’s working waterfront is one of the most active commercial and recreational fishing centers along NC’s coast. The town’s marinas, charter docks, and seafood restaurants reflect the broader maritime tradition that has defined the community for generations.
