The headline outdoor stop in Purlear is Rendezvous Mountain — a 1,800-acre site that became part of the North Carolina State Parks system in 2022, finally realizing a vision that dates back nearly a century. The site is best known for its Revolutionary War heritage: the mountain served as an assembly point for the patriot militiamen who marched east to the decisive Battle of King’s Mountain in October 1780, an event that helped turn the tide of the war in the southern colonies. Visitors today can hike its moderate trails through hardwood forest, take in sweeping views of the surrounding Blue Ridge from the summit, and explore an old Civilian Conservation Corps cabin that still stands near the top.

Just a short drive from Purlear, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers access to some of the area’s most beloved overlooks and trails. We’ve explored several of these stops firsthand — including the Cascades Trail, The Lump Overlook, and Tomkins Knob Overlook — each offering its own take on the wide views of the Yadkin Valley and the distant peaks of the broader Blue Ridge. These stops are especially rewarding in the fall when the leaves change color, but they reward visitors throughout the year.

If you’re looking for quiet, natural beauty without the crowds of more popular destinations, Purlear is one of the most rewarding outdoor stops in northwestern North Carolina.
