For one of the most rewarding short waterfall hikes anywhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cascades Trail is a real standout. Set near Purlear, NC in Wilkes County at E.B. Jeffress Park (Milepost 271.9), this one-mile loop descends through a rhododendron- and hemlock-lined forest to a striking waterfall on Falls Creek. It’s the kind of hike that delivers a real visual payoff with minimal effort — perfect for families, dog walkers, and anyone looking to break up a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway with a short woodland walk. Be sure to check out the YouTube video and pictures below to get a feel for the trail before you go — or to relive the visit after.
A Short Hike to a Beautiful Waterfall
The Cascades Trail is a one-mile loop rated moderately easy, with about 300 feet of elevation change. The wide, well-kept gravel and stone path begins with a gentle descent through a beautiful stretch of rhododendron, hemlock, and hardwood forest. Once the trail meets Falls Creek, it follows the water through a series of switchbacks and wooden boardwalks — with the sound of rushing water building as you approach the main attraction.
At the bottom of the loop, a viewing platform and a short connecting path lead to the main Cascades waterfall — a 35 to 40-foot sliding rock falls where Falls Creek slides smoothly over a broad rock face. The falls are especially impressive after rainfall, when the water volume picks up, and the entire scene takes on a more dramatic character. Benches at the overlook give you a chance to settle in and enjoy the view before heading back up the trail.
A Civilian Conservation Corps Touch
Like much of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cascades Trail and the surrounding E.B. Jeffress Park area carry a quiet but meaningful connection to the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built many of the original trails, structures, and facilities along this stretch of the parkway in the 1930s. Interpretive signs along the trail share more about this history, adding a layer of cultural depth to the route beyond its natural beauty.
Reaching the Cascades Trail
The Cascades Trail has its own dedicated parking area along the Blue Ridge Parkway at E.B. Jeffress Park (Milepost 271.9). On weekends and during peak fall color, the main parking lot fills up quickly, so plan to arrive early if you can. If the main lot is full, an excellent alternative is to park at the nearby Tomkins Knob Overlook and take the short connector hike over to the Cascades trailhead. That’s what we did on our visit.
For a deeper look at how we combined the two stops into a single half-day outing, see our blog post Blue Ridge Parkway Double Dip: Hiking the Cascades Trail & Tomkins Knob Overlook.
