The Elk Shoals Trail at Elk Shoals Access in New River State Park is a delightful, unnamed path on official state park maps that we’ve affectionately dubbed the Elk Shoals Trail for its scenic riverside charm. This gentle, easy-walking trail runs parallel to the serene South Fork New River, offering continuous, peaceful views of the gentle current as it meanders through shaded groves of sycamore and river birch trees. Much of the path consists of gravel, providing a stable and accessible surface underfoot, while more traditional natural-surface service trails branch off to connect to the far end of the path, adding a touch of rustic adventure as you explore farther along the riverbank.
Strolling its length provides perfect opportunities for wading in the cool shallows, casting a line for fishing, or simply pausing to reflect amid the soothing sounds of flowing water and Appalachian nature. Along the way, you’ll encounter subtle remnants of the property’s history—structures and foundations that once belonged to the Methodist Camp, which owned and operated the site (originally established in the late 1800s and later as Camp Elk Shoals) from around 1958 until its sale in 2018 due to maintenance challenges.
Acquired by the New River Conservancy and then transferred to expand the state park, this trail preserves the area’s natural beauty while echoing its past as a beloved religious retreat. Whether spotting wildlife, wildflowers, or the elusive hellbender salamander, the Elk Shoals Trail delivers a relaxing, low-key hike immersed in tranquil river scenery and a touch of local history.
