New River State Park – River Run Trail

The River Run Trail at the US 221 Access in New River State Park, North Carolina, is a moderate hike that follows the scenic New River through the Ashe County mountains. Marked with orange blazes, the trail is about 1.4 miles one way, and many people combine it with the Hickory Trail for a 2 to 2.5-mile loop.

The path winds through pine forests and then drops down to flatter ground beside the river, offering great views of the water, rocky banks, and nearby ridges. Along the way, hikers can also see remnants of an old homestead, adding a bit of history to the scenic experience. Hikers will find both easy stretches and some uphill sections, with narrow trails covered in leaves, shrubs, and roots. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy nature, and you might see deer or birds along the way.

Many visitors start near the visitor center, boat launch, or picnic areas, making this trail a favorite for day hikers exploring this quiet part of the park.
