Some breweries earn their identity from a name. Ironclad Brewery has the goods to back it up. Tucked into a beautifully restored 1925 building in historic downtown Wilmington, this craft brewery and event venue takes its name from the iron-armored Civil War warships that were once built right here in the Port City. With 10,000+ square feet of space spread across two floors, an impressive lineup of beer, wine, and spirits, and one of the most stunning brewery spaces in town, Ironclad has built itself into a real Wilmington gathering spot. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.
A Civil War Name with Real Wilmington Roots
The “Ironclad” wasn’t just a creative name pulled from a hat. The Ironclads were a class of armored warships built right in Wilmington’s Beery’s Shipyard during the Civil War — heavy iron-plated vessels designed to break through wooden ship blockades. That nod to Wilmington’s rich shipbuilding heritage is woven into the brewery’s identity from the name on the bottle to the flagship “Ironclad” beer lineup itself.
The connection to history doesn’t stop at the name. The brewery occupies a striking 1925 building in downtown Wilmington — a structure that has lived several lives, including a stint as a car dealership in the mid-20th century. When Ironclad took over the space in 2014, the team painstakingly restored the building, keeping the original interior brick walls and roof intact, and even repurposing the second-floor wood flooring (originally installed during its dealership days) to create a large mezzanine balcony overlooking the first floor. The result is one of the most beautifully unique brewery spaces in town.
The Beer (and Beyond)
Ironclad serves craft beer, wine, and spirits — and the brewery has built a serious reputation for the care that goes into its lineup. The team sources hops from their own partner hop farm (Alexander Farms in Alpena, Michigan) and develops custom ingredients with a network of Wilmington-area businesses including Platypus and Gnome, Spice Merchants, Magiknights, and Pour Taproom. That hands-on, ingredient-first approach shows up in the glass.
The beer list rotates regularly across a wide variety of styles — from classic flagships like the Ironclad IPA and pale ales to seasonal Märzens, lagers, fruited specialties like Shelby’s Supreme Cream Helles, hard seltzers, and bold one-offs. The variety means there’s almost always something on tap that fits whatever mood you walked in with.
A Two-Story Brewery and Event Venue
What really sets Ironclad apart is the space. Across more than 10,000 square feet on two full floors — each with its own large bar — the brewery has room for casual taproom hangs, sit-down dinners, full corporate events, weddings, and just about everything in between. Original exposed brick walls, the open roof structure, and the repurposed second-floor wood give the space a beautifully rustic-meets-industrial character that you genuinely can’t find at most breweries.
The second-floor mezzanine overlooks the main floor and is one of the most striking spots in downtown Wilmington to grab a beer.
More Than Just a Taproom
Ironclad hosts more than 150 events a year — including weddings, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, corporate events, and charity functions. It’s become one of the most sought-after event venues in Wilmington, with two full floors, dedicated event staff, and a backdrop that doesn’t need much decorating to look stunning. If you’re attending a Wilmington wedding or corporate event, there’s a real chance Ironclad is where it’s happening.
