North Wilkesboro is the largest town in Wilkes County, NC — a foothills community on the north bank of the Yadkin River, directly across the water from the county seat of Wilkesboro. Set where the Yadkin meets the Reddies River in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it carries two fitting nicknames: “Key to the Blue Ridge,” the town motto, for its role as a gateway to the mountains from the east, and “Key City,” the commercial nickname earned by the industry and commerce that built it.
Though Wilkes County’s biggest stories — the Moonshine Capital of the World, the birth of NASCAR, the founding of Lowe’s — all run through North Wilkesboro, the town has plenty of its own character today. A revitalized historic downtown, a hard-earned distilling heritage, and an outdoor greenway make it a worthwhile stop in its own right, not just a footnote to the county’s larger legacy. A Railroad Town Built on Industry
North Wilkesboro was, as one local history puts it, “an upstart from the beginning.” It was founded in 1891, when the Norfolk and Southern Railroad ended its line on the north bank of the Yadkin, opposite the older town of Wilkesboro. North Wilkesboro grew up around the depot as the center of industry and commerce, while Wilkesboro across the river remained the seat of government — a rivalry that shaped both towns from the start.
Industry defined its first century. North Wilkesboro was home to the Carolina Mirror Company, for many years the largest mirror factory in the United States, as well as textiles, tanneries, and furniture manufacturing — including the Key City Furniture plant that gave the town its commercial nickname. In 1946, Lowe’s opened here as a small downtown hardware store before growing into the Fortune 500 home improvement giant, and Lowe’s Foods followed in 1954. That industrial backbone is still legible in the brick storefronts and repurposed factory buildings downtown.
A Revitalized Historic Downtown
Downtown North Wilkesboro became a recognized North Carolina Main Street community in 2000 and is part of the statewide NC Main to Main Trail. Decades of revitalization have filled the historic district with galleries, restaurants, shops, and antique stores. The Liberty Theatre has anchored Wilkes County entertainment for more than 90 years. The Wilkes Art Gallery showcases regional and state artists, and the multi-story Key City Antique Mall occupies a former Key City Furniture building.
The town’s calendar draws visitors year-round. The ‘Shine to Wine Festival each May traces the county’s arc from moonshine to its growing wine industry, while the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival — celebrating the harvest from the nearby Brushy Mountains — is one of the largest single-day arts and crafts fairs in the Southeast, regularly drawing crowds well over 100,000. The Yadkin River Greenway threads a natural corridor along the river between North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro, offering walking, wildlife, and riverside access right between the two downtowns.
