She’s hard to miss. Sitting in the Cape Fear River directly across from downtown Wilmington, the Battleship North Carolina is 728 feet of steel, history, and sheer presence — a genuine World War II warship you can climb aboard and explore from the bilge to the bridge. It’s one of Wilmington’s most iconic attractions, and one of those rare experiences that lands just as hard for a curious kid as it does for a Navy veteran. Be sure to check out the YouTube video and pictures below to get a feel for the ship before you go — or to relive the visit after.
The Most Decorated U.S. Battleship of WWII
Commissioned in April 1941, the USS North Carolina (BB-55) was the first of a new generation of fast battleships built for the U.S. Navy — and the first American battleship constructed in roughly sixteen years. She went on to serve in every major naval offensive in the Pacific Theater, earning 15 battle stars and the distinction of being the most decorated American battleship of the Second World War.
For the sailors who lived aboard her, she was a floating city — a self-contained world of more than 2,000 men, with everything from a bakery and barbershop to a post office and sick bay packed into her decks. Today she serves as a memorial to the North Carolinians who gave their lives in WWII, and as one of the best-preserved battleships of her era anywhere in the country.
Exploring the Ship
A visit is a self-guided tour through nine levels of the ship, and you get a remarkable amount of access. You can walk the teak main deck beneath the massive 16-inch gun turrets, drop down into the cramped engine room, peer into the crew’s berthing and mess areas, climb up toward the bridge, and explore the gun turrets, powder magazines, galley, and more. What surprises most first-time visitors is just how much of the ship is open — you really do get to wander from bow to stern and top to bottom at your own pace.
Plan on around two hours to see it well, though it’s easy to lose track of time and stay longer. The route involves narrow passageways, steep ladders, and tight spaces, which is part of what makes it feel so authentic, but it’s worth knowing in advance.
Beyond the Self-Guided Tour
For visitors who want to dig deeper, the Battleship offers special programs and guided experiences — like the “City at Sea” and “Behind the Hatch” tours — that take you into areas and stories you wouldn’t catch on your own. Most programs are free with regular admission, though some require advance booking, so it’s worth checking the schedule when you plan your visit.
There’s also a free riverfront boardwalk that wraps around the ship at water level — a great spot for photos and a nice walk even if you’re not boarding that day, and if you keep an eye on the water, you might just spot Charlie, the resident alligator who’s made the marsh around the ship his home.
Good to Know
- Location: 1 Battleship Road, Wilmington, at the junction of Highways 17, 74, 76, and 421, directly across the river from downtown.
- Open daily, year-round, with ample on-site parking for cars and bikes.
- Plan ahead: Mornings are the best time to visit — the ship gets genuinely hot inside during the warmer months, and arriving early means smaller crowds.
- Dress for it: Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes — there’s a lot of walking, climbing, and ducking through hatches.
- Accessibility is limited by the historic structure of the ship (narrow passages and steep ladders), but the visitor center and grounds are accessible.
- Re-entry is allowed the same day, so many families pair the visit with a picnic in the nearby park area.
A Wilmington Must-See
There aren’t many places where you can physically walk through history like this. The Battleship North Carolina isn’t a recreation or a museum exhibit behind glass — it’s the real thing, and standing on her decks gives you a genuine appreciation for the people who served aboard her. Whether you’re a serious history buff or just looking for one of the most memorable ways to spend a few hours in Wilmington, this one earns its spot at the top of the list.
