Boondocks Brewing – Taproom & Restaurant

If you find yourself in downtown West Jefferson, NC, after a drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains, Boondocks Brewing is one of those stops worth planning around. As the first craft brewery in Ashe County, opened in 2012 by a group of veterans with a passion for good beer, Boondocks has built a serious local following — pouring quality small-batch beer, serving thoughtful comfort food, and offering one of the most welcoming gathering spots in the area. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.

A Brewery with Real Roots in Ashe County

Boondocks opened its doors in 2012 as the first craft brewery in Ashe County — a real milestone for the area’s growing food and drink scene. The brewery was founded by a group of veterans who shared a passion for good beer and a vision for what a small-town brewery and restaurant could be. Over time, ownership has expanded to include the brewery’s employees, giving the team running it a real stake in every part of the experience.

That history of veteran founding and the employee-owned model that followed shape everything about how Boondocks operates — from the welcoming staff to the consistency of the beer to the genuine community feel that runs through the brewery.

What You’ll Find

The Tap Room & Restaurant has a lively, mountain-town atmosphere that works just as well for a casual lunch as it does for a longer hangout. Expect a thoughtful selection of small-batch craft beers across multiple styles — from hoppy IPAs to smooth, malty stouts and everything in between — alongside a full menu of comfort-leaning food that pairs nicely with the brewery’s pours.

The food menu leans into the kind of satisfying, locally inspired dishes that go well with a craft beer in a small mountain town: hearty plates, fresh local ingredients, and a few signature creations that have built their own following over the years. We’ll add a personal note here — we once had the meatloaf at Boondocks, and it just might be the best meatloaf we’ve ever had. If it’s on the menu when you visit, it’s well worth ordering.

A Downtown West Jefferson Anchor

What makes Boondocks worth visiting isn’t just the beer or the food — it’s how the brewery has become part of the social fabric of downtown West Jefferson. Locals come for the regular hangout. Visitors stop in after exploring the galleries, Mount Jefferson, or Ashe County Cheese. And the room’s energy reflects the kind of welcoming, lively atmosphere that makes small-town breweries so worth seeking out.
