Located along the tranquil shores of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area in Pine Knoll Shores is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and adventurers. Covering approximately 265 acres, this pristine preserve surrounds the North Carolina Aquarium and protects one of the last remaining maritime forests on Bogue Banks. The area was donated in 1971 by the Roosevelt family to honor President Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation legacy. It features two scenic trails: the 1.2-mile Theodore Roosevelt Nature Trail, which meanders through a high dune ridge and salt marshes rich with wildlife, and the shorter Alice Hoffman Nature Trail, which is family-friendly but requires Aquarium admission for access. This trail is perfect for a leisurely stroll to a viewing blind at East Pond. Visitors can observe river otters, marsh rabbits, gray foxes, and a variety of birds such as egrets and ospreys while enjoying the serene beauty of the coastal ecosystems.
